About us

Towards Recovery was founded in 2012 with the aim of making Recovery more visible in Henley-on-Thames and the surrounding areas.

We did this to show that Recovery from addiction is possible, that people in Recovery are responsible citizens and community assets that positively contribute to the wellbeing of those around them.

We opened the monthly Recovery Café in Henley on Thames, as a safe space for people in recovery from addiction to meet, and where families could go for help and peer support.  We also held a variety of events through the 4 years of our operation including 3 Recovery Conferences, several film nights and a play, attracting people from all over the UK.

The evidence is fairly well developed showing that Recovery is sustained by having a job, a home and positive social network.  Over the last 4-years we have focussed mainly on the positive social network element, through the café and the events we have run, however, we now want to expand what we do.

This is an exciting development for us and allows us to bring our own brand of innovation and creativity to helping people in Recovery get access to work and to housing.  Doing this means moving beyond the Henley based recovery café to developing an extended programme of events and services that can be delivered anywhere.

In 2017 we became a Community Interest Company with the aim of:

  • Making Recovery more visible

  • Showing that Recovery from addiction is possible

  • Demonstrating that people in Recovery are responsible citizens and community assets that positively contribute to the wellbeing of those around them

  • Offering a growing, supportive and active Recovery Community expressed in real world and online interactions of those in (and seeking) Recovery, their families and friends, other drug and alcohol (and allied) services, employers and other social enterprises, charities and the institutions that make up wider society.

We will build on the support received from high profile people in recovery, including  John Taylor, Duran Duran who inspired our 2014 conference guests with his story.

In 2018, we received lottery funding for an ‘Out of Hours’ project and re-launched our Recovery Cafe nights. Most recently, we developed the comedy course ‘Laughter is the best medicine’ in partnership with the Comedy School.
